  BR AGAIN LOWERS PROPOSED FARE RISES 
  British Rail has again lowered      
  proposed fare rises for commuters   
  in London and the south-east        
  because of pressure from John Major 
                                      
  Fares will go up by 6% in January - 
  which is three times the rate of    
  inflation, but less than BR wanted. 
                                      
  Ordinary fares on InterCity will    
  rise by 5%, although most off-peak  
  ones will not change.               
                                      
  It is the second year in a row      
  that the Prime Minister has         
  intervened to peg increases.        
 
