      UNEMPLOYMENT FELL    
      BY 13,600 IN SEPT    
 
  Unemployment during September       
  showed a surprise fall of 13,600    
  to 2,908,300 according to latest    
  seasonally adjusted figures.        
                                      
  US unemployment now stands at 10.3% 
  of the workforce. Economists had    
  expected a smaller fall to leave an 
  unchanged unemployment rate.        
                                      
  Average earnings rose 3.5% in       
  August, compared with the same      
  figure in the previous month.       
                                      
  Unit wage costs in manufacturing    
  sectors in August were down 0.6%    
  from a year earlier.                
