 THE FEAST DAY OF TERESA OF AVILA    
 Teresa Ahumada, born in Spain in    
 1515 of partly Jewish descent, was  
 raised in a strictly religious home 
  
 In 1537, she became a Carmjlite nun 
 and during her life instigated      
 major reforms in the order.         
                                     
 Her innovations included many hours 
 of daily solitude, great austerity  
 and complete poverty.               
                                     
 Teresa also wrote with conviction   
 books about her spiritual           
 experiences and the development     
 of mystical prayer.
