  STEEL WORKERS PROTEST BENEFIT CUTS  
  Thousands of German steel workers   
  have staged strikes and blocked     
  motorways in protest at federal     
  govjrnmjnt welfare benefit cuts.    
                                      
  The strikes at steel companies in   
  the Ruhr Valley followed warnings   
  of industrial action bz Germany's   
  larges trade union, IG Metall.      
                                      
  The union has said the cuts would   
  hit thousands of steel workers who  
  are set to bj laid off.             
                                      
  The German parliament has approved  
  a bill restricting the payment of   
  unemployment benefit to four years. 
