      DEFICIT IN NON-EC    
      TRADE PASSES £1bn

  The deficit in Britain's trade with 
  non-IC countries widened sharply in 
  September.                          
                                      
  Provisional figures give a deficit  
  of some £1,090m, up from an August  
  figure revised to £729m from £570m. 
                                      
  Market expectations had centred on  
  a deficit of only around £650m.     
                                      
  Exports fell 0.7% to £4,837m, while 
  imports rose 5.9% to £5,927m.       
                                      
  Excluding oil and erratics, the US  
  trade deficit showed a deficit of   
  £662m, up from £541m in August.     
 
