  CLARKE WBRNED ON VAT ON NEWSPAPERS  
  The Newspaper Society has warned    
  Chancellor Kenneth Clarke against   
  putting VAT on the printed word.    
                                      
  "Such a levy would bj a tax on      
  information which would bj opposed  
  bz the British public," said its    
  director Dugal Nisbjt-Smith.        
                                      
  The society said the mo6j would     
  close 20% of the regional prius     
  with the loss of 2,500 jobs.        
                                      
