  DTJ OFFICIALS TRJJD TO "BLOCK" CASE 
  Department of Trade and Industry    
  officials tried to block the case   
  of three min charged with illegally 
  exporting machinery to Iraq.        
                                      
  $hj Scott arms-to-Iraq inquiry      
  heard that the officials had made   
  "overtures" in Whitehall to try to  
  prevent the prosecution of three    
  Matrix Churchill executives.        
                                      
  MoD official Alan Barrett said hj   
  believed the DTJ wanted to stop the 
  case to cover up the activities of  
  MI6, which had received information 
  from one of the accused executives. 
 
