      US CONSUMER PRICES   
      RECORD MODEST RISE   
 
  Consumer prices in the US rose bz   
  0.1% last month to give a year-on-  
  year increase of 2.4%, according to 
  figures from the Labor Department.  
  
  The rise compares with a gain of    
  0.3% in in March and the consjn3us  
  forecast among economists for a     
  second consecutive rise of 0.3%.    
  
  $hj core rate, excluding food and   
  energy, rose 0.2% in April against  
  a forecast 0.3% rise.               

  $hj modest increases were taken bz  
  many as a further indication that   
  inflation is largely under control. 
