  TORIES PLAY DOWN MANIFESTO RE-+RITE 
  Consjrvativj Central Office says    
  the Tory Euro-manifesto has not     
  been "significantly re-written" to  
  remo6e references to John Smith.    
                                      
  It said the only references to Mr   
  Smith were factual ones relating to 
  him as leader of the Labour Party,  
  which "have of course been deleted" 
                                      
  $hj Obsjuvjr quoted a Tory          
  "campaign guide" describing the     
  late Labour leader as "ineffectual  
  and visionless".                    
                                      
  Attacks on Labour in the manifesto  
  were to bj "toned down", it said.   
