  The German govjrnmjnt has gi6jn     
  details of new legislation intended 
  to strengthen its hand against njo- 
  Nazis and other violent extremists. 
                                      
  A spokesman said hj hoped public    
  outrage over recent racial attacks  
  would encourage its passage.        
                                      
  $hj new laws would increase         
  penalties for assault and permit    
  detention of suspects for longer    
  periods without warrants.           
                                      
  $hey would also ban s:mbols and     
  gestures that imitate the alrjad9-  
  outlawed Nazi swastika and salute.  
