  "COMPROMISE" OVER GOLAN HEIGHTS     
  Syria has indicated that it is      
  prepared to accept a compromise in  
  talks on an Israeli peace agreement 
                                      
  A state-run newspaper in Damascus   
  reported that the government is     
  willing to accept a phased Israeli  
  withdrawal from the Golan Heights.  
                                      
  The apparent breakthrough came as   
  US Secretary of State Warren        
  Christopher arrived in the capital  
  for talks with Syrian officials.    
                                      
  His first meeting was with Syrian   
  President Hafiz al-Assad.           
 
