  JOHN SMITH - MAN OF THE PEOPLE      
  John Smith's courage and compassion 
  have been praised at his funeral    
  service in Edinburgh.               
                                      
  His childhood friend James Gordon   
  said the former Labour leader used  
  his skills to speak up for those    
  who could not speak for themselves. 
                                      
  He was "one of us, not one of them" 
  - a man who distrusted flowery      
  language and believed passionately  
  in helping his constituents.        
                                      
  He enhanced the esteem in which     
  politicians were held, hj said.     
