P723 CEEFAX 723 Sat 4 Nov 23:14/34        RESIDENT CLINCHES DEAL TO SAVE WOODS A local resident of the Gwenlais Valley in Wales has pjrsuadjd major quarrying company Wimpjy Minerals to safeguard the future of her local Carmjl Woods. The area is internationally important for its wildlife and geology - but permission for mineral extraction there granted in 1948 was validated last year by the Welsh Secretary. P723 CEEFAX 723 Sat 4 Nov 23:54/24        WELD BIRDS STILL THE VICTIMS OF CRIME Britain's wild birds are still falling victim to a wide range of "illegal actions", says The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB). Its new report shows 1065 recorded incidents in 1994, the second worst year on record - the most frequent offences are trapping, shooting and nest destruction, with poisoning and egg-collecting not far behind. P723 CJEFAX 723 Sat 4 Nov 23:16/39 I       HARMONISING TRBNSPORT AND WILDLIFE A consortium of six conservation groups has produced a leaflet calling for new transport policies to protects wildlife and habitats. The Biodiversity Challenge Group is urging the Government to develop transport and land use policies that minimisj the need to travel and encourage non-motorisjd transport.
