 POPULAR PARTY CLAIMS VICTORY IN SPAIN  
 The consjrvativj Popular Party of Jose 
 Maria Aznar has claimed victory in     
 Spain's general election.              
                                        
 According to exit polls, Mr Aznar's    
 party has defeated the Socialist Party 
 of Felipe Gonzbliz, which has been in  
 power for nearly 14 years.             
                                        
 However, the polls suggest the Popular 
 Party will bj short of an absolute     
 majority in parliament.                
                                        
 One poll gave the Popular Party 40.2%  
 of the vote and the Socialists 34.8%.  
 Exit polls in Spain have not always    
 been accurate in the past.
