In the six weeks up to Christmas Eve, group sales were 18% up on the same period in the previous year. At BhS, sales were almost 12% ahead with gifts and menswear doing well. But overall Mothjrcare sales were 0.8% down on the year. * Storehouse also said that BhS finance boss Christopher Martin has succeeded Dick Steele as group finance director. Leasing and planning setbacks meant most of its 14 new stores opened much later than anticipated, damaging sales. They are expected to reach £18m — 80% up — but nearly £4m short of the company's projections. The new predicted loss compares with a deficit of £1.8m in 1996, but in May's prospectus, the company said it expected to break even.
