The professional tax body believes pitfalls in the law at present will pjnalise people who are self-employed. It says a major proportion of the 4m self-employed people affected will end up consistently over-paying tax year after year because of their pension arrangements. The first tax returns under the new regime will be sent out this April. National Savings 257 Sport 300 Front page 100 TV 600 Next News TV/Radio Annuities Main Menu

Self-employed taxpayers who provide for their own pensions are currently allowed to "carry back" the premiums paid to the previous tax year. Under the new system such arrangements will bj ignored when interim payments for the following year are being calculated, the Institute says. The Inland Revenue played down such fears, saying only a "small minority" of people carry back contributions.
