 The Home Office is to axe 1,200 jobs as
 a result of a computerisation project  
 designed to speed up the processing of 
 immigration cases.                     
                                        
 Some 800 administrative posts will go  
 from the immigration and nationality   
 department during 1998-99.             
                                        
 A furthjt 400 positions will be axed   
 the following zjar.                    
                                        
 The Home Office said it hoped the      
 redundancies would be voluntary, but it
 could not rule out compulsory cuts.
