 The banking giant is part of a takeover
 race for Scottish Amicable after its   
 £1.4bn approach was outbid bz a £1.9bn 
 offer from the Prudential.             
                                        
 A spokesman said Abbey has started work
 with Scottish Amicable to ensure that  
 its final offer fully values both staff
