 film since The Piano, and seems to have
 the same strengths and weaknesses.     
                                        
 Intelligently, beautifully and         
 carefully m de, it centres on an       
 excellent performance bz the leading   
 lady and yet is emotionally uninvol6ing
                                        
 Thjtj is much to admire in the look of 
 the film, the direction and the acting.
                                        
 But John Malkovich's mannerisms are    
 too irritatingly familiar. Here, his   
 performance is like the one hj gave in 
 Dangerous Liaisons, but minus the charm
