 FOUR IN 10 BRITONS NOW HAVE MOBILES    
 Mobile phone sales surged in the run-up
 to Christmas, with an estimated 40% of 
 people now subscribing to one of the   
 UK's operators, new figures show.      
                                        
 Data from Orange and Onj2Onj show 2.4m 
 customers signed up to the two         
 companies in the last quarter of 1999. 
                                        
 Figures from Vodafonj AirTouch, dui out
 later today, and from BT Cellnjt, which
 will release its trading figures on    
 Thursday, should show a similar jump.  
                                        
 Orange passed the 5m customer mark this
 week. Onj2Onj had 4.16m by December 31.
