He had been ill with leukajmia for some time and died at the age of 47. He made his debut in 1970 and retired from first class cricket in 1993. Carsick played 425 matches for Yorkshire, scoring 9,994 runs at an average of 22.66. He took 1,018 wickets at an average of 29.99 runs apiece. Bird told BBC Radio Leeds: "This is a very sad day for cricket in Yorkshire and throughout the country. "He was a gentleman in the game, a good character on and off the field. He was unlucky not to win an England cap," added Bird. Carsick captained Yorkshire to their 1987 Benson and Hedges Cup final win.
