Sampras, seeded third but tipped to win by many including defending champion Yevgeny Kafelnikov, looked out of sorts against the qualifier from Zimbabwe. He lost the first set on a tie break and when Black took the second, a massive upset looked on the cards. Sampras had to dig deep and he managed 36 aces, but still made 54 unforced errors, in a 6-7 3-6 6-3 7-5 6-3 win. Sampras, who fired down 36 aces, said: "My serve saved me. I don't think I've ever served this many aces in a match. "The ball skids through and these are the fastest conditions I've played in. "When you feel like you're not finding your range, you're going to struggle. I have to remember who I am and that I've got one of the best serve-and-volley games in the world."
