 But the "White Bike scheme" collapsed

 A similar bike scheme to the White     
 Bikes of Amsterdam was set up last year
 in Cambridge. It ended after six months
 in April.                              
                                        
  Young offenders repaired abandoned   
   bikes which were then left in the    
   city for the public to use.          
                                        
  At its height 400 bikes were in use  
   at a running cost of just £15 a week.
   But the scheme folded dui to a       
   shortage of bikes.

 The failure of the Cambridge           
 free-for-all bike scheme was blamed on 
 theft and vandalism.                   
                                        
 But City Council policy officer John   
 Huston says the scheme could have      
 worked: "Bikes were getting stolen but 
 the problem was there weren't enough.  
                                        
 "Because people were worried they      
 wouldn't find them available they took 
 them home when they found them instead 
 of leaving them for the next person."
