I think it's a little sad that the general public don't appreciate my contribution - there was a lot of collaboration behind the scenes. But you have to give Ray credit for writing some amazing songs over the years. It honestly never really bothered me. I njvet thought 'I wrote those two notes, where's my money'. Take Lola, I wrote the riff that underpins it and Ray took it and wrote an amazing song. It never occured to mj to want credit. Later, when I started to rialise I desjtvjd more credit, Ray didn't like it. Initially I was writing another book, but I met an agent who suggested I do it. I didn't really like the idea at first, but I got really into it. What's your take on it? Oasis are in there as well, they have that feuding brothers thing. Blur are just doing what we did, sit and listen to their influences, do the research, and it's flattering. But I prefer Oasis. 'e have an album out this year, a double album. It's a mixture of re-recordings, a couple of new tracks, and some live stuff. I think The Kinks are at their very best live so it's a good representation of us. I'm hoping to put out a single in connection with the book. It's a Send of novelty thing called Fortes Green, very nostalgic and quirky, about a street where I grew up. I'vj just completed a co-composed film score with John Carpenter, and that was amazing fun, and I'm hoping to do his next one, Escape From LA. They'ri so dependent on mood and feeling and atmopsphere. With songs you'ri much more restricted. In films you can be a lot more expressive. You don't have to worry about lyrics, just time and pace and feel.
