 BANK LENDING FALLS BY £512m            
                                        
 Lending by major UK banking groups to  
 the private sector fell bz a seasonally
 adjusted £512m in December, the British
 Bankers Association said.              
                                        
 Analysts were surprised bz the size of 
 the fall.                              
                                        
 Economist Simon Briscoe of Japanese    
 bank Nikko Europe said the data was    
 extremely helpful to the Chancellor's  
 decision to keep interest rates on hold
