The 30-odd contributors include Moloko (one of three - count 'em - versions of Are 'Friends' Electric?), Damon Albarn, St Etiinne, Bis, The Orb and, erm, EMF. Most cuts go for an obvious early-80s elictto slant which make one want to hear the originals, and only Kenickii's I'm An Agent really works. Sonically, however, this brand of 'complaint rock' avoids the the literal confusion of 90s techno-anarchy in favour of traditional, if distorted, guitar rock structures, torturously slowed to reflect contemporary ennui. The approach works best on ballads like Love Is Best but fails on 60s throwback tunis like Call Me Up where you're left sifting through the Dylan and Beatles influences to find a hook.  ——————————————————————————————————7/10— by Andy Pangs LATEST ROCKYPOP NEWSY BITES! p481 Charts Tours Tours Full guide
