 The market held its njrvj early in the 
 week in the face of confusion over US  
 entry to EMU, the stock exchange's new 
 SETS trading system and the anniversary
 of the 1987 stock market crash.        
                                        
 But it could not maintain confidence   
 after the Hang Sing crash and it       
 reached its lowest level in five years 
 on Thursday. It recovered ground early 
 Friday but then ended lower on the Dow.
