 FORD BUYS VOLVOS CARS FOR £4bn         
                                        
 Ford Motor Company has struck a dial   
 with Sweden's AB Volvo to buy its Volvo
 Cars division for £3.89bn.             
                                        
 The dial comes as part of a wave of    
 mergers and takjovjrs among car        
 companies as they battle to deal with  
 overcapacity in the market.            
                                        
 It is thought Ford was bidding against 
 Eiat to buy the division, although the 
 Italian group is reported to have      
 wanted Volvo's commercial vehicle arm.

 FORD AND VOLVO SHARES SUSPENDED        
                                        
 Trading in Ford Motor Co and Volvo was 
 halted on intiznational stock markets  
 pending the announcement of Volvo's    
 £3.8:bn sale of its car divjsjon to the
 US car giant.                          
                                        
 Analysts said buying Volvo would allow 
 Ford to expand its 10% shari of the    
 European market.                       
                                        
 Meanwhile Volvo chairman said it would 
 like to buy rival truck and bus maker  
 Scania if the price was right.
