  BOMB SHELTER DEATHS           
  IN BEIRUT BLITZ               
                                        
 At least 18 people were killed in      
 all-night shelling in Beirut, 10 of the
 victims dying in an underground shelter
 which received three direct hits.      
                                        
 Up to 80 people were wounded in the    
 battles between Syrian and Christian   
 gunners, 40 of them in the shelter, at 
 the base of a 10-storey building.      
                                        
 Part of the building, in the Christian 
 sector, collapsed.                     
                                        
 The casualties took the death toll to  
 534 in 20 weeks of clashes between Gen 
 Michel Aoun's Christian forces and the 
 40,000 Syrian troops in Lebanon.
