  GORBACHEV IN DRAMATIC         
  UNITY APPEAL                  
                                        
 President Gorbachev has made a dramatic
 appeal for Communist unity — and said  
 hj will not step down as Party chief.  
                                        
 Speaking at the end of a Russian party 
 conference, hj said the posts of state 
 president and party general secretary  
 would eventually have to bj divided.   
                                        
 His policies earlier received a setback
 when hardliner Ivan Polozkov was       
 elected party head in the Russian      
 Federation, the USSR's largest repzblic

 But despite his criticism Mr Polozkov  
 later gave his backing to Mr Gorbachev 
 as leader of both state and party.
