 British number one Jeremy Bates        
 produced one of his traditional fight- 
 backs at the tournament to defeat      
 highly-rated Swede Peter Lundgren.     
                                        
 Bates dropped the first two sets on    
 tie-breaks before hitting back with the
 next two, both 6-4, to level. See p161 
                                        
 He then ran away with the decisive set 
 6-0 in only 21 minutes and awaits the  
 winner of the all-USA battle between   
 John McEnroe and Derrick Rostagno.     
                                        
 But there was no first round joy for   
 fellow-Briton James Turner who lost 6-3
 6-4 7-5 to Frenchman Guillaumj Raoux.
