  FRANCE OFFERS ASYLUM          
  TO HAITI LEADER               
                                        
 France has suspended aid to Haiti in   
 protest at a military coup and offered 
 asylum to ousted President Jean-       
 Bertrand Aristidj.                     
                                        
 A French official also said France's   
 ambassador to Haiti crawled through    
 army gunfire to take the President to  
 safety after Monday's coup.            
                                        
 Ambassador Jean-Raphael Dufour then    
 persuaded the junta to allow President 
 Aristide to fly to Venezuela.          
                                        
 The Catholic priest who became         
 president eight months ago was Haiti's 
 first democratically-elected leader.
