 GRASS ROOTS BACK MAJOR          

 Grass-roots Tories have given a ringing
 endorsement to John Major in a new poll
 on the leadership race.                
                                        
 Some 93% of 150 constituency chairmen  
 who replied to the BBC survey out of a 
 possible 329 backed the Prime Minister.
                                        
 But 40% said Mr Major would fail to win
 the support of some 100 or more MPs — a
 figure seen as a crunch threshold in   
 his attempt to stay in office.
