 ASYLUM BIDS REACH RNCORD LEVELS 

 The Govjrnmjnt faces accusations that  
 Britain is a "soft touch" for asylum   
 sjekjrs as thl number of applications  
 was predicted to reach record levels.  
                                        
 The Immigration Serv ce Union said     
 asylum applications will hit 68,000    
 this year, up from to 46,000 in 1998.  
                                        
 Th  union has accused the Hon  Offico  
 of failing to provude ad quake         
 resources to deal with the influx.
