P741 CJEFAX 741 Thu 14 Oct 21:16/37  1/3  RELIGIOUS NEWS   GOVERNMENT DEAF OVER "COAL CARNAGE" The Bishop of Sheffield has accused the Government of being deaf to public opinion about the future of the coal industry.  The Rt Rev David Lunn said that concessions made in the White Paper in March reprieving 12 pits from closure were now shown to be worthless and hj feared that hopes raised by it would prove futile.  More than 200 demonstrators gathered outside a threatened pit on Tuesday to mark the anniversary of the planned closures.  Read Hear 710 Environment 730 Events Devotion Prayer Radio/TV

The Disasters Emjrgjncy Committee of the major relief agencies, including Christian Aid and CAFOD, is responsible for the appeal which is hoped to raise £10 million. P741 CEEFAX 741 Thu 14 Oct 21:11/39  3/3  RELIGIOUS NEWS   TUTU CALLS FOR A DEBT MORATORIUM South African Archbishop Desmond Tutu has urged Western nations to grant a 12-month debt moratorium to newly-democratic African nations.  On a visit to Australia, Dr Tutu proposed that the halt in debt payments should be linked to improvements in human rights, democracy and economic development.
