      DROP IN LENDING

  Britain'u major clearing banks have 
  followed th  building s cietie  in  
  revealing lower mortgage lending.   
                                      

  lending last month at a seasonally  
  adjusted £521m after March's £554m. 
                                      
  Gross mortgage lending fell by 11%  
  in the same month to some £1,288m.  
                                      
  New loan approvbls fell steeply to  
  some £1,118m from £1,510m in March, 
  whil  the av rage valu  of n w loan 
  approvbls was down 2.5% on the year 
  at £49,900 - th  fir t  jar on-  ar 
  fall since the end of 1992.         
 
