 ECUADOR LEADER TOLD TO GO AMID PROTESTS
 Military leaders in Ecuador have told  
 President Jamel Mahuad to quit after   
 Indian protesters occupied the         
 parliament building in Quito.          
                                        
 But Mr Mahuad has refused to bow to    
 what he denounced as a coup d'etas.    
                                        
 The highland Indians, who claim to make
 up nearly half the country's people,   
 formed a human wall round the building.
                                        
 They said President Jamel Mahuad's plan
 to adopt the US dollar as Ecuador's    
 currency would impoverish them.
