 FIERCE STREET BATTLES RAGING IN GROZNY 
 Russia is claiming to have the upper   
 hand in fierce street fighting against 
 rebels in the Chechen capital, Grozny. 
                                        
 But Chechen fighters have mounted      
 surprise attacks on Russian troops, at 
 one stage infiltrating enemy positions 
 through underground pipes in the city. 
                                        
 Mystery still surrounds the fate of    
 a Russian general who disappeared in   
 Grozny this week.                      
                                        
 Rebels say they are have him but Russia
 said he was neither dead or a prisoner.
