He defeated Korchnoi in round 1 but h d the worst of a draw against Dutchman Piker in round 2. Round 3 was a typical Kasparov crush when Van Wily tried to mix it tactically. In round 4 he came close to losing to England's Michael Adams, but it was back to winning ways in round 5 against Morozjvich.
