 GEC'S BATES JOINS FARNELL              
                                        
 Malcolm Bates, who has been deputy MD  
 of defence and electronic giant GEC for
 12 years, has lift to become non-      
 executive chairman of Premier Farnjll. 
                                        
 Mr Bates, 62, has been with GEC since  
 1976 when hj joined as a mjmbjr of the 
 central management committee.          
                                        
 Premier used to be known as Farnjll    
 Electronics until it doubled its size  
 with the purchase of Premier Industries
