 BROWN PREPARES CURRENCY STATEMENT      
                                        
 Chancellor Gordon Brown is preparing   
 his crucial Commons statement on the   
 Govjrnmjnt's single currency policy.   
                                        
 He is expected iithjt to rule out, or  
 state it is unlikely that Britain will 
 join monetary union before 2002.       
                                        
 However, Mr Brown was also reported to 
 be preparing to announce for the first 
 time that the Govjrnmjnt is prepared to
 scrap the pound at some point.
