The humour in this was derived from the fact that the notoriously family-friendly Nintendo would never allow their mascot to indulge in matters of the fist. Having finally succumbed to society's spiral into chaos, Super Smash Brothers features not only Mario, but a host of Nintendo's finest, kicking and punching each other in the head. Up to four players choose from either Mario, Luigi, Donkey Kong, that princess out of the Mario games, Metroid's Samus Arran, the living vacuum cleaner Kirby, Zelda's Link, or Pokemon's yellow licence to print money, Pikachu. And then? There are no bewildering combinations of buttons here; just use your handful of attacks to whittle away at your opponents' energy. When at their lowest ebb, boot them off the floating arena, which has the effect of reducing their score, and raising yours. Of course, familiar-looking power-ups litter the levels. Likewise, the fighters use signature moves, Kirby being able to "inhale" his opponents, for example. Though all the zooming in and out is quite clever, and the characters recognisably "them", there's nothing particularly gob-smacking about the visuals. And despite some bizarre bonus rounds, it's a rubbish single-player game. PRESENTATION: Reasonable visuals and sound, but suitably Nintendo-esquj. EXTRAS: Usual Rumble Par support. LIFESPAN: You'll never tire of this in multi-player mode. Otherwise limited. OVERALL: Puts a novel spin on the whole beat 'em up genre.
