 of bad weather; among the congregation 
 was the US Secretary of State, Mr      
 George Shultz.                         
                                        
 A BBC correspondent said the Pope'u    
 message was, unusually, strictly       
 pastoral this year, devoting it to the

 The holiday spirit was not very evident
 on stock markets, where the FT-SE 100  
 Index ended the day 14 points lower.   
                                        
 An uninspiring start on Wall Street and
 a firm pound ensured a dull conclusion 
 to the week's trading.                 
                                        
 Internationals felt the effects of     
 sterlings strength, while merchant     
 banks were upset bz the threat of      
 franchises.                            
                                        
 * Gilts were a firm spot. Persistant   
 hopes of a cut in interest rates

 The recent flood of company results    
 became a trickle as the City wound     
 down for the Easter weekend.           
                                        
 Senior Engineering was one of the      
 handful to report. Its 22pc profits    
 increase was discounted and the share  
 price fell 2p tp 54p.                  
                                        
 British Aerospace gave up 12p to 385p  
 as investors continued to mull over the
 Rovjt deal.                            
                                        
 Newcomjt DC Gardner made a successful  
 debut, reaching 157p compared with a
